Baby Names

When the ultrasound at sixteen weeks showed that our first child would be a boy, I was shocked but very happy and felt so blessed to be having a son. The reason I was shocked is because, for some reason, I always had it in my head that I would have girls. I had several girls names picked out and had been perusing the stores looking for pink clothes.

My shock quickly faded and I had so much fun picking out adorable “little man” outfits for my soon to be first born son. I found the most adorable Winnie the Pooh travel system with car seat and stroller. We decorated his room in a Winnie the Pooh theme and it seemed that almost everything I received at my baby shower had Winnie the Pooh on it. It was easy picking a theme to decorate his room in and easy picking out adorable little outfits for my son. The hardest thing was picking out a name.

My husband and I are very picky when it comes to our kid’s names (as I am sure all parents are). I bought several baby name books, I scoured the internet for baby name websites. I tried to remember names of boys I had heard in the past that I liked. We wrote lists, we discussed, we thought it over and over, but just couldn’t decide on the perfect name. We wanted a name that was unique without being too difficult to spell. I liked certain names that my husband didn’t care for and vice versa. No one ever told me how difficult it is to name a child. It’s a big burden to bear, since your child will have that name forever!

When I went in to have my first son, we still weren’t 100% sure on the spelling of the first name we chose. We had decided on the first name, though. The middle name was a different story. We just couldn’t decide. We finally decided on Finley Andrew. Finley is of Irish and Scottish origin and means fair-haired courageous one or fair-haired warrior. He is very fair-haired and indeed a courageous little boy who has had to endure more than a lot of little boys his age health-wise. He is such an angel and I think the name fits him perfectly now. It’s like the name was meant for him.

With our second son coming so soon after our first, my husband came up with his name… Kieran. We chose it because we liked it and thought it went well with Finley. It is also of the same origin as Finley.

How did you come up with your baby’s name? Is it a family name, a name you just like the sound of or maybe a name that has special meaning to you?
